The Irish Sri Lanka Trust
Fund was founded on 28th December 2004 in response to
the devastation caused by the Tsunami in Sri Lanka.
On the 31st December 2004 the Monerawela Family and
their friends collected money at Navan Shopping Centre,
Super Valu Johnstown, Carolans Supermarket and on the
streets of Navan and so began the Irish Sri Lanka Trust
Fund.
With their fishing boats destroyed, families had no means of providing
for themselves. The Trust Fund commissioned 3 boat building yards in Sri Lanka to try and alleviate this problem.
5 main building projects have been undertaken by the Irish-Sri
Lanka Trust Fund. 3 of these are housing developments, a technical school and a Home For
The Elders.
The most powerful earthquake in 40 years erupted under the Indian Ocean
near Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004. It caused giant, deadly waves to crash ashore in nearly a dozen countries,
killing tens of thousands.
H.H. Saman Kalinga is one of the thousands of tsunami victims
who lost everything. Many expressed their gratitude in writing, here is Saman's own letter of
